MALTA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA: ORCHESTRA FOLK FUSION
The premiere of five new works for Maltese traditional instruments and orchestra

29 June L-Imnarja – is a celebration of local culture, and it is with this in mind that the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra is presenting a very special performance as part of the Malta International Arts Festival on that day. Under the direction of conductor Riccardo Bianchi, an MPO chamber orchestra will be presenting five new pieces of music commissioned to Maltese composers: Karl Fiorini, Jes Grixti, Christopher Muscat, Albert Pace and Ruben Zahra. Each composition will feature traditional Maltese instruments, including the żummara (reed pipe), the żaqq (bagpipe), the flejguta (cane flute), tanbur (tambourine) the żafżafa (friction drum).
