Solo violin: Kana Ohashi
In this morning concert, the youthful creative forces of Cosmo Strings present a programme of contemporary music that might surprise you. In its ubiquity, Vivaldi’s masterpiece seems to have become background noise. Post-minimalism on Vivaldi’s bones: there are stark, surprising parallels with which the musicians’ favourite moments evolve, they change. This piece is preceded by cellist-composer Giovanni Sollima’s Vibrez!, a work which similarly plays with the idea of a gradually morphing thematic development, albeit on a slightly adjusted scale. Originally written for an ensemble of cellos, here the depths of this instrument are widened across the wider palette of Cosmo Strings. Engaging and visceral, this arrangement for two solo violins and strings demonstrates the myriad colours that an ensemble of soloists is capable of.
