Cosmo Strings comprises current and ex-students of the Royal Northern College of Music, all of whom have won awards or demonstrated exceptional talent. The ensemble is founded upon a desire to perform string orchestra repertoire in a concentrated, raw vein, in which each line is moulded by the soloist who plays it, thus distilling ‘orchestral’ to ‘chamber’. Debussy’s sole string quartet of 1893 is at once defiant in sonority and expression. Particularly stark in its formal innovation is the second movement, whose cyclic theme is classically regular yet avant-garde in development. Liga Korne performs Estampes, a piece with a tangibly international disposition. His Cello Sonata, performed by Waynne Kwon and Liga Korne, is the first in a projected sonata cycle interrupted only by the composer’s death in 1918.
